RSO is short for Rick Simpson Oil. Rick Simpson is a Canadian engineer and cannabis advocate who created a full-spectrum (also known as a whole-plant extract) cannabis oil after a work accident caused a variety of health issues. Whole-plant extract refers to all the cannabinoids of the plant, including THC, CBD, flavonoids, terpenes, proteins and other potentially beneficial compounds.
The full-spectrum nature of RSO means that users may benefit from the “Entourage Effect”, where the combined action of cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds may amplify the therapeutic benefits of the medicine. The potentially therapeutic effects of RSO may help patients manage symptoms associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic pain and the side effects caused by cancer treatments.
Initially, scientists identified the entourage effect as a new and innovative method of regulating endocannabinoids, whereby multiple chemicals work together to elicit a response at the cellular level in the body. The term evolved to describe the combined effects of cannabis phytochemicals or whole plant extracts. The phrase is used to describe how the compounds present in cannabis work together to create a powerful effect, which is greater than the sum of their individual parts.
